Margo's Promise

Margo placed the backpack on her bed and started piling clothes and other provisions into it. Logan had left. He had left without telling her! She was supposed to protect him. Despite her being the youngest and only female Asher it was her job to protect her older brother. She pulled on her sweater, zipping it up without a sound. She needed to be extra quiet. Her mom need not know that she was leaving too. Margo pulled a beanie over her curly black hair. She checked herself over once to make sure she was good. Sweater, beanie, jeans, boots, and her grandmothers scarf, wrapped around her neck a few times.

She grabbed her backpack, shouldering it and heading out. She stepped out of her room carefully, looking up and down the hall twice. Margo walked down the hall hurriedly, sliding down the banister, landing on her feet with catlike agility. She looked around for the castle guards even though they were useless. They didn't do anything to protect the castle at all. She saw a shadow coming closer from down a hall and hid behind one of the giant curtains that covered one of the many giant windows in the entrance hall. She didn't hear anyone walk in so she peeked out. It was just her cat.

"Hey Macy..." She said as she kneeled down in front of the cat. Macy meowed softly, purring a bit as Margo pet her gently. "I'm going away for a while. I'll be back soon though. I promise." The cat made a choked whining sound. Margo stood up straight and opened the big castle doors carefully. They creaked loudly and she cringed. She looked around once more before slipping out into the cold night. She took a deep breath and mumbled to herself, "it's going to be okay Margo. You're an Asher. You can do this. You promised Shadow you'd protect your brother no matter what. Now you need to live up to your promise." She took another deep breath and headed off into the nearby woods.
